Haiti – Day 4 – March 16, 2018 – Farewell

Story Posted:

It’s hard to believe that the trip is over.  I’m writing this as I’m back in the USA—sitting comfortably in our son’s house in Charlotte.  Here are a few thoughts—I’m sure there will be more.

First of all, transportation is amazing.  I’m glad I didn’t have to drive anywhere while we were there.  As we sat comfortably on a bus, I had to choose not to be anxious about the situations the drivers were facing.  The ... Read More

Declutter with Habitat ReStore: A simple spring cleaning checklist

Story Posted:

More than 70 percent of Americans take part in some form of spring cleaning every year, according to the American Cleaning Institute. The benefits of this annual tradition are easy to see: a clean home is a healthier home. It also provides a great time to take stock of the things you need and those you don’t.

Though spring cleaning is often most associated with bleach and glass cleaner, scrubbing and dusting, many also use the ... Read More

Haiti – Day 3 – March 15, 2018 – Habitat Epicenter Work

Story Posted:

I need to start with a funny story from yesterday—I forgot to post it!!!  We’ve been traveling on a bus that seats around 20 people.  Yesterday morning as we were leaving the hotel (for our inaugural trip), all four of us that are representing US affiliates got on the bus.  All the Habitat Haiti people were in the driveway.  There was no driver on the bus, only a security guy in the very back.

All of ... Read More

Haiti – Day 2 – March 14, 2018 – Habitat Reimagined

Story Posted:

Today started with a quick stop at Haiti’s national office for Habitat—and the obligatory photo op.

After that we went to the project office for the Simon Pele neighborhood of Port-au-Prince.  While there, we had a presentation by Barth who explained to us how Habitat was stretching itself.  They have focused on access to housing, rather than only building housing.  Of course, after the devastating earthquake of 2010, there was so much work to be done ... Haiti – Day 1 – March 13, 2018 – Arrival

Story Posted:

Landing in Port-au-Prince was different than most landings I’ve experienced.  I usually pick an aisle seat, if at all possible—therefore, I don’t get much of a view out the plane window.  But I could still see a little of the area surrounding the airport.  Often, when flying into Atlanta or Charlotte or one of our major US cities, you see houses (some would call McMansions) on good-sized lots, sometimes with a pool in the backyard.  ... Make a tall planter box from pallet wood with these easy steps

Story Posted:

I love working with pallet wood.

Each pallet board is unique in character, and has a mysterious story of travels and escapades that I’ll never know. It’s fun to think that the parts to this planter box could have been anywhere in the world and transported anything from tools to furniture to books and so much more.

So enough about my romance with pallets, let’s dig into the DIY of making this ... Read More
